Why Use Play?

Adults generally use words to express their feelings and to try and make sense of situations affecting them.  With children, it is often easier to use their natural tendency to play as a way of encouraging communication, relationship-building, expression and problem-solving in an emotionally safe, therapeutic environment.

I practice non-directive (or child centred) play therapy.  This means that your child leads the way and I follow – I will not get them to ‘do’ anything they don’t want to.  My role is one of deep observation and support, keeping them safe whilst respecting their readiness to further understand their emotions.  This is done by reflecting back any feelings and thoughts that will help them to process their difficulties and learn about themselves, encouraging them to adopt new, healthier attitudes and feelings towards life's situations.

It is essential to keep in mind that Play & Creative Arts therapy is not a magic pill or a quick fix: therapy of any kind is a healing process that necessitates participation and investment from the patient and caretaker alike. But in the end, making small changes to self-defeating behavior and learning to cope with feelings of sadness, fear, anxiety and pain can bring life-altering results.
